Friends and family poured into the stadium at Sprayberry High School Tuesday night in Cobb County. They weren’t there for football or lacrosse, but rather to remember one of their own.
Twenty one year old Squire “Skip” Wells, a 2012 graduate of Sprayberry, was among the 5 military members who were gunned down in Chattanooga last week.
It was a very emotional evening as Wells’ NJROTC instructor, Gunnery Sgt. Joe Ingram, talked about how Wells always wore a smile. “If something was wrong with him”, said Ingram, “you never knew it, because he was always smiling.”
A marine honor guard presented flowers to Wells’ mother prior to the start of the service. She sat in the stadium ticket booth during the service, according to military officials.
Sprayberry High is working on a permanent memorial to Wells. Pictures of him were placed along the stadium railing as the many in attendance waved flags, and applauded wildly as planes flew overhead and balloons were released in his memory.
